THE REAR VIEW MIRROR

Hemet, CA and Garden Grove Lodge #1952
Wagon masters: Elk-Enders

The 50th Elks California Ralley was held October 11 - 14 at Hemet, California with more than 20 RVs and Elk Ender volunteers from our Garden Grove Lodge in attendance. We were able to enjoy a weekend to raise money for the Major Project and socialize with friends from other Lodges and watch a lightning and thunder storm Friday night. The rain limited some outdoor activities on Saturday. General Wagon Master Jerry Tretter, the man in charge, made sure we cooked and served breakfast, hot dogs and hamburgers. Our participation included preparing and serving nearly 190 people cook to order omelet breakfast, biscuits, home-made gravy, orange juice, and fruit on both Friday and Saturday mornings. A special thanks to chefs David Skelton and Chuck O'Dey for organizing the breakfast and those who served and did all the clean-up both days, in particular Mike Mathers from the Fullerton Lodge who David Skelton recruited to help cook omelets. Jerry and Kathi Tretter and their hamburger/hotdog cooking crew did a fantastic job preparing and cooking. In addition, our support for this major fund raising event also included Sheriff Ken Moody and his deputy Rod Watkins bringing justice to wayward individuals. Early reports indicate over $25,000 was raised for the Kids. The Elk-Ender family enjoyed a delicious pot luck dinner at the Skelton's site with David and Chuck O'Dey preparing a superbly cooked dinner, supported with the delicious delights from others.

Once again the Halloween Rally, this past month, was a large success for the Lodge and the Elk-Enders. Over 27 RVs, of various types and makes, gathered for a Halloween Rally, open to all Lodge members and guests. There are many members to thank for their efforts in making this past weekend a success but special mention must be made to Elk-Ender President Eileen Rasmussen, PDDGER David Skeleton for conducting the horse races and as master of ceremonies, Janice Skelton for organizing all the various fun games all weekend. Our members (Robbi Maurer, Kathi Tretter, Sue Catlin, Terry Watkins, Nancy Caughlin) also organized and conducted the successful Silent Auction. Once again Pete and Gretchen Doeringer for obtaining the numerous gift envelopes for the raffles and costume winner prizes, and all who coordinated the parking (Ken Moody), ticket sales (Howard Whittaker, Jay Morrissey, Terry Watkins, LuAnn Barrows), Halloween back drop (Bill Catlin), accounting for all funds (Bernie Caughlin) and the many other members who volunteered each day. Of course the Lodge staff did a superior job of providing excellent meals and service. We especially thank the camping members from the Corona Lodge #2045 for their fun filled spirit in the costume contest, games and horse race activities.

A large contingent of fun followers enjoyed the ever popular Skru-Yur-Neighbor (Nancy Caughlin the winner two members from the Corona Lodge and Debbie Pavich) and Card Bingo games on Friday afternoon. Following an excellent buffet Friday evening David Skelton auctioned six horses for Saturday afternoon races. David also presided as MC for the evening which included a costume contest with a number of categories. The costumes were original and participation high in all categories. Winners included Debbie Pavich as the Scariest, Group "Girl & Boy Scouts" by Pauline Hoffman's family as the Most Creative, the Funniest Costume was a tie between the Catlins (Bill & Sue) and the Johnsons (Dean & Linda), Best Group (Team Barrows/Maurer/Watkins/Draughon) the Queen of Hearts, and the Best Couple Sherrie and Lance Larson as the Pregnant Lady and the Milk Man. Drawings were conducted for raffle tickets in various gift envelopes, an overflowing booze wagon, and an opportunity drawing. During the evening we enjoyed an excellent buffet dinner and we danced to the music provided by Howard Wingo. Saturday started with a fine breakfast by the Lodge Staff followed by a silent auction of the finest items not listed on Craig's List. The afternoon horse races were exciting and entertaining. As at all races there were majestic steeds and nags with lots of cheering and anguish for each race. Horses Four and Five tied for the most races won. Names of horse owners were withheld for IRS purposes. During the day additional tickets were available for surprise raffle envelopes, Booze Wagon and the opportunity drawing.
