THE REAR VIEW MIRROR

Over the last 25 years, the Elk-Enders have traditionally started the New Year with our January campout at beautiful Woods Valley Campground in Valley View, California. This campground has a plethora of beautiful oak trees, a crystal clear stream running through it, a beautiful pond filled with ducks and fish, and a large club room with a roaring fire place.

On some occasions, the Elk-Enders have filled the entire camp with motorhomes. This month ten rigs showed up with 17 excited campers who enjoyed beautiful weather with plenty of fresh air. A group of early campers arrived on Wednesday and had a wonderful dinner at a local casino. Some decided to gamble and leave a donation for casino improvements, that is, all except Chuck O'Dey who decided to accept a generous donation to his bank account.

On Thursday, Debbie Mahoney's cousin, Tina and her husband Peter, who live near the campground invited the entire group to dinner at their home. Peter is a master at using his Traeger grill and he cooked us all ribs, chicken, and all the fixings. They also invited us last year for dinner at their beautiful home.

During Friday afternoon, Sherrie Larson, Past President invited the ladies to join her in an art project which culminated in beautifully decorated glass dishes. Friday night we all enjoyed spaghetti & meatballs along with salad, garlic toast, and an abundance of desserts. We followed dinner with a fun game of Left, Right, Center and the winner was.....Debbie Mahoney.

Saturday we had our traditional game of Bean Bag Baseball. The men (the Balls & Bats) outnumbered the ladies (The Catcher's Mitts) but that did not stop them from trouncing the men with a score of 15 to 8. Jim Young (the elder) brought his friend Patti Cavalieri to the campout and she had no idea how to play the baseball game. On her very first throw, she scored a "Home Run". I think she was the ladies secret ringer.

At our Saturday evening meeting, Sheriff Mark Mahoney showed up and issued fines to all present who had misbehaved during the weekend. A total of $28.00 in fines went to the Purple Pig. Following dinner we had another game of Left, Right Center and again our new visitor Patti Cavalieri was the winner. I guess she should have hit the casino and joined Chuck O'Dey in the winner's circle.
