THE REAR VIEW MIRROR

March 9-12 California City
March 23-26 Newport Dunes RV Park

The Elk-Enders would like to take this opportunity to thank Randy and LuAnn Barrows for a tremendous year as President and First Lady. Great Job. We look forward to this next year of fun and activities with Gary and Carol Lawler as our new President and First Lady.

March was a fun and busy month for the Garden Grove Elks Elk-Enders. Hosted by the Mahoneys and the Spychajs, 34 Elk-Enders and guest held the semiannual "Do It In The Dirt" classic fun outing with a poker run for a lot of fun and an opportunity to support the major project, the "Purple Pig" and at the same time win prizes for themselves. Many enjoyed the warm high desert weather and others enjoyed riding and driving their different types of off-road. Mark, as usual put on a great trip with his special Olympic metals and prizes. Miles, Mark's son, with friends along with Joe Spychaj and Don Quijada set-up the 12 mile poker run course in addition they took care of the check points. We were able to give away excellent prizes and a lot of avocados and oranges. Bonnie Hoffman and Chris ensured the poker hands were accurately reviewed. Each evening sported a large campfire used by all attending. Sean and Trina Smorick served steamed hot dogs one day and a delicious "breakfast in the bag" on Sunday morning. The Purple Pig fund grew by $240.00, which included a $100.00 donation from Mike Avalos, a longtime friend of the Hoffman family.

The second March outing consisted of Elk-Ender members and guests (50 RVs) enjoying the Newport Dunes RV Park. The Ed & Gloria Sauer, Bill & Ruth Dunivin, Mike & Teresa Cortez, Pete & Debbie Levario, and Betty Lynch combination as Wagon Masters did an excellent job. We gathered in a RV site for Margaritas, “Attitude Adjustment”, on Friday afternoon prior to an excellent catered dinner from our Elk Lodge. Friday night found our normal Scru-ur-Neighbor card game was won by Andy Schmader beating-out Marilyn Walker with Steve Slape taking the third place winnings. Saturday morning's Pot Luck Breakfast provided the usual great variety and tasty food followed on Saturday by a gathering and tour at Eileen Rasmussen's new RV and a sampling of champagne. Later in the afternoon appetizers and libations were served during rousing baseball game with the men winning. Saturday night consisted of another catered Mexican Taco dinner by Pedro from our Lodge and of course a visit from the Sheriff. Sheriff Steve Slape noted the many violations of our member's actions or lack of actions. He determined a simple fine for each rig was just and would bring in more funds. Thanks to the Sheriff’s fines, and donations from the Margarita Bar, Scru-ur-Neighbor, LRC game Saturday the Purple Pig was well fed with another $470.00.
